Merc 5hp pumping water but not cooling

I have a Mercury 5 HP outboard (serial# A820444), not sure of the year. The motor gets really hot after a couple of minutes. Then, the motor loses power and dies (on boat). Is it possible that the impeller is bad, even though it pumps water?
Also, there is a large thumb screw on the right of the rear shaft, about half way up. It is tightened all the way in. What is it and could that be part of the cooling problem?
