Re: 50 horse mercury outboard does not start
Take the cowling off, make sure it is in neutral just in case, take the plugs out of the engine, and put them in the boots where you can see them, where they can ground and where they wont bite you, take the yellow black wires from the key kill switch and the safety switch, if there is one, off the CDI box, take a jumper wire and jump the starter like you have been doing. It should crank fast and spark. If it does hook up the switch wires one at a time to see if you can find a ground. The most common problems are the key and the safety or start in gear switches, they are fussy little things and get bumped and corroded.
