I need some advice on how to remove the swivel housing and water pump from the upprer gear case.My Clymer shop manual says to insert a1/4" steel rod through the steering post and tap lightly, after removing the 4 bolts, of course. Did they leave out a step? If anyone else has run into this problem, let me know how you got it apart, if you have the time.

I really don't have the slightest idea what that toilet paper manual tells you to do. Please do yourself a favor and get a factory manual or a seloc at least, omc sterndrives to 1985.

What I do is put the drive all the way down with a piece of wood under the skeg. You can lower the front of the boat if its on a trailer, than raise the front till the drive skeg is touching the wood.

1-Drain the upper gear case. Optional you can drain all 3 cases if you want.

2-Remove the 4 screws on the very top of the drive.

3-remove the the top cover.

4-Drop the lower end have a table ready or something to lay it on. Be very very careful with the shift cable. Hard to come bye.If all your doing is the impeller no need to disconnect the shift cable from the lower unit.

3- Looking into the upper case is 4 bolts remove. That plastick housing is what has to pulled. No you cant use a puller. Tap the plastick housing with a hammer to break the seal. I always buy the whole impeller kit with housing.

Usually i strike a screwdriver to spin it than i mess it up. Remove the driveshaft, impeller plate, impeller, and impeller housing as one unit.

Re: OMC '85 800 series impeller replacement

Thanks so much for your help. I had serious doubts about the Clymer manual as soon as I started reading it. I'm new to this site and I didn't think my letter posted, so I posted a second one before I read your reply. I want to reseal it while I have it apart, the oil had a milky color to it. Is that a difficult job or would I be better off taking it to a mechanic? Thanks again.
