I have a 1965 9.5 Johnson Seahorse. It is the best running engine I have ever owned by far. I recently got it out of storage it had been sitting for 6+ years and it started on the 3rd pull. Johnson make the best small outboard.
The problem is the it pops out of gear and the engine revs up as soon as up give it gas. It does the same in foward and reverse. Up can hold pressure down on the gear shift lever to make it stay in gear and drive the boat but it requires two hands and is uncomfortable. While driving it and holding in gear the motor makes a loud bang about every 20-30 seconds (it is trying to pop out of gear) but doesn't since I am holding it in gear.
Hints to the problem before I tear it apart?
