I have a Mercury 9.9, a 90's model with remote. When placed into reverse, the motor will not go into the reverse gear. Also, sometimes when in netural, it is still engaged in forward. It will increase power but not shift into gear.

The outboard is attached to a 26" Balboa sailboat and I just installed a CMC lift, but the motor seemed to work fine the first few times I used it.

Open for suggestions.

I also have a same outboard.When i change the impeller i had the same problem.
On the side of the handle just above the lower engine cover is a rod which conrtols the gear.This rod have an adjustable retainer (on my engine is blue color).You should adjust the rod with this retainer in the appropriate position.
