I have a 115HP rude that under the muffs overheats in about 5 minutes, there is a stead stream of water that is being pumped out and say every minute or so it will stop for a spit second and then spit strong again. Now the starnge thing is the water coming out alternates from hot to cold on and off. Would this be the cause of a old/bad water pump or would you lean more towards the thermostats?

Thank you for any help you can loan.

The tell-tale water flow tells you that the waterpump is functional but It tells you nothing about the flow of water through the cooling circuits of the actual engine, which is controlled by the thermostats opening and closing.

The water temperature leaving the tell-tale will be warmer when the thermostat(s) open, but still tells you very little since you can't tell if both are working or if they are working correctly.

You should be able to put your fingers on both cylinder heads at any time the engine is running for a full three count without undue discomfort.

If you have replaced the water pump, then rebuild the thermostats. There is a thermostat kit available from iboats that has everything that you need (Sierra part # 18-3673).
