Engine Idle, Cuts Out.

Hi All, Am new to this site, Having a problem with my 4.3 merc inboard. engine running well (for being 20 yr old) but when skiing and boarding and stopping to pick up skiers, i switch engine off for saftey. Then when starting again nearly always have to use throttle first and often cuts out at idle speed. could a new set of plugs leads and distributer cap help.

a tune up would not hurt, including carb cleaning, and setting.
