i have a 1989 85hp force that quit running. my father in law, from whom i bought the boat told me to clean out the carb bowls, so i did that, now it will run fine when it is out of the water, i.e throttle all the way up but when i put it in the water and under load it wont even go 10 mph wide open, i used to ski behind this boat. also while it was in the the water my son wanted to go for a ride anyway so we did, the engine used 5 gallon of gas in a very short period of time. as i said i am familiar with this boat and know that it used way too much gas in a way too short period of time.

reomve and rebuild the carbs. It shold run fine after that but needs it no matter what else may have gone bad.

A Force is a Force, not a Mercury, Glen, even if it was made by Mercury.

do you have any suggestions as to the best place to get rebuild kits? and do you know of any other place on that engine that i can find the model number, as the sticker that has the number on it is illegible. im no dummy but on the same note im no outboard motor mechanic how difficult is it to rebuild those carbs, should i take it to a marina or is it going to be easy enough for me to do. i have rebuilt auto and motorcycle carbs before

i do not recall saying that a force was a merc but thanks for clearing that up anyway. i figure if there was a merc hanging off of the back of my boat i wouldnt be having this problem. a very wise man once told me that a boat was nothing but a big hole in the water for you to throw your money into. also that a man has only two good days while he owns that boat, the day he buys it, and the day he sells it.

You may have lost spark on one cylinder.Carb rebuild is straight forward.
most carbs operate on the same basic design,size and sofistication is the only difference.Be sure all passages and jets are clean.

1985 Force 50hp Motor wiring question

1985 Force 50hp Motor wiring question

I have a 1985 50hp Force motor I just bought. There is a orange wire that comes up from the ignition that is marked THERMAL. The wiring diagram in my book shows it coming up to the wiring block and terminated. But in my motor it isn't terminated, but has another orange wire that is just dangling. The idiot I bought it from doesn't remember where it goes. I assume it is some kind of thermal shut off connection. Any ideas? HelllllP!

Sounds like one of your cylinders is not firing. Check your ignition system to make sure you are getting a nice blue spark. If your ignition checks our OK, you may have clogged carb that is not feeding proper amount of fuel to one of your cylinders.

have checked all three cyls and have good spark, was reading some other blogs about fuel probs. when i cleaned out the carbs i removed the floats, do they need readjusted after they are replaced or do they go back the same as you took them off? also should all three carbs be exactly the same? i.e. springs and such. the bottom carb was missing a spring where the bolt that holds the bowl goes on. i found another spring in my garage that looked to be the same size and put it in. mabe that is my whole problem. remember that my motor is using an exorbiant amount of gas and has no power. thanks for everyones suggestions and keep them coming

First check to see that the exhaust hose inside the leg is not disconnected or broken. This will cause problems as your engine is breathing exhaust gases if it is not serviceable. This will also cause poor fuel economy.

Next, check your compression. If you have a blown head gasket between two cylinders it will also reduce your power output. Also, check for cracked hoses on the engine recovery and fuel pump system. These get hard and crack.

Let us know what you find.
