Hello all,


Just wanted to get some advice on what type of gear oil I should use in my lower unit. (Evinrude 6 h.p. circa late 60's early 70's)

Does anyone have the link to a iboats page that I could use to find out the year of my 6 hp. I'm estimating late 60's early 70's

Was there a certain year that Evinrude changed to using different gear oils? If so does anyone have data on these increment of years and what they recommended for each evolution of motors?

The model number should be located on a 1" X 3"+/- aluminum plate located on the port transom bracket. Failing that, it may be stamped on a nickel sized convex welch plug on the engine block. The model number can be translated by the OMC archive chart found here:

When the 1965 6HP models came out, they were using OMC type C oil in the gearcase. That has since been superseded by not a few other high viscosity marine gear oils, all of which are suitable as long as they are high viscosity marine.
