1996 sport jet 120 xr wont start when put in the water

I have a 1996 sport jet 120xr that will start fine out of the water but when i put it in the water it dies and wont restart and when i take it out of the water it will start right up again! Has anyone run into this before ? Am i ingesting water into my engine through my exhaust or a possible gasket concern any help would be great before I bring it to my boat mechanic

check your lowest plug for water or milkey color. (exhaust gasket)
