Hi Everyone,

Looking for possible ideas. I bought a Ranger with 85 Johnson GT 150 V6. I had to replace the plugs the other day because they seemed to be gummed up and sticky. The boat normally starts fine and runs like a champ.

The other day on the water I was running normal and clean but bringing it in to dock at low RPM it stalls and I have trouble re-starting it. It almost acts like its flooded but doesnt always smell like gas.

Eventually after 15 minutes or so I can restart the boat and go through the same cycle and then it wont restart again. Frustrating since I'm fishing.

Any ideas?

I would start by checking the spark and compression then go from there.

The spark should jump the gap on an inline tester a good 7/16 of an inch, and the compression should be around 100 psi, but more important, within 10% between cylinders.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks,

I'm new to outboards so I havent checked much yet. My original thoughts are that the carbs are dirty or something since the plugs were dirty when I took them out. My other thoughts is it could be something like a dirty fuel filter (despite looking new) or I need a new fuel/water seperator.

I can check the compression if thats the best idea to start with. Are there a lot of cylinder problems with these engines?

Changed the fuel/water seperator which looked fine. I changed the spark plug wires which seemed to solve the problem; the plugs weren't getting enough current to them which was causing low spark and flooding in the chambers.
