Hello,
I am new to the board and even better, new to boating. Here is what I have, I have a 74 slickcraft with a 1985 85 horse johnson. Is this engine fuel injected? It only has throttle bodies it seems. There are no bowls of any sort and really no adjustment except fuel and idle it seems. It has coils like an automobile and a distributor box?? Like I said I know nothing about these engines, but thought I could fix it since I work on cars....well anyway.
The engine is very hard to get to start, it cranks fine. I have checked all the wiring to the engine and everything seems good. Another thing, it will only start with the choke fully closed, and after it's running it won't run with it open at all. I have checked the fuel lines for any obstructions (per previous posts) and I have checked the mix and ran it out of an extra gas can just to be sure it wasn't full of water or just bad gas. I pulled the plugs, all seem to be firing, but number four is covered in oil. That is what prompted me to check the mix, but with the throttle bodies wouldn't it affect more than just one plug, I can see a carb handling a single cylinder or even two?? This boat was given to me as payment for working on a car so I thought I could get it running and have some fun, the boat itself is in really good shape except the wiring, which I had to completely redo (it was running bad before I messed with it
So anyhelp or suggestions would be really, really appreciated I have been working on it for about three weeks and it still sputters and won't come above idle, but I think that has to do with no being able to come off choke...Thanks again
Sean K
