Hello,
I have a 1999 Mercrusier 4.3L and had the serpintine belt shred on one edge and come off this weekend. I replaced the belt with a new one and after running for about 2 hours the new one did the same thing. The belt is not breaking but seems to ride up off of the power steering pump pulley. If I remove the belt I can move the power steering pump shaft in and out by about an 1/8 of an inch. Would this be enough to cause the belt problems? Would the power steering pump need to be replaced? Thanks.

First of all, look for rust on any of the pulleys, that will eat up a belt very quickly.
Also check idler pulleys. The bearing go out on them and allow them to tilt which will walk the belts out of the grooves.

Thanks. There is some rust on the pulleys, I will clean this up. The idler pulley dosen't look tilted but there is some play in the bearing. I am going to try to replace this and see what happens.
