I have a 1958 johnson seahorse 10,model # qd-19

when i try to start it, it will only run for max 5 seconds before it dies, i have fully cleaned the carbs and set the settings that i found on this forum, it sounds good when it does run. if i prime the ball, nothing really changes, it has a pressure tank, but only has one hose coming off it connecting to one hose on the motor ? i dont think that is right?

I was wondering where the fuel line connects to the motor. also , I checked the spark and one side is pretty weak, there is new plugs and caps on both.

I took off the recoil and the plate on flywheel , dont really know what to look for, i attached a picture of a discoloration on what i think is the coil, they do not look cracked or anything at all. where can i find a cheap puller to take the flywheel off, which parts will i need when the flywheel is off? thanks alot

I posted some pics of the motor, can someone let me know if all the cables and hoses are going to the right place, i had it gaven to me and it ran

Those photos are small and hard to see. Are you sure it's a QD-19 as it looks green in the photos and it should be red?

If the spark is weak you'll need to change the coil and probably both. Get a harmonic balancer type puller and screw the 3 bolts into the top and crank it off.

The pressure tank should have 2 hoses. If it runs for 5 seconds it's cause you are manually pumping the fuel into the carb with the button on the tank and then it is running out (although that is a tad fast) The 2 hoses are air pressure from the engine to pressurize the tank and then the return fuel line. This replaces the fuel pump which it did not have. Get that fixed up before you move on.

Also, before putting any loot into it, check the compression to see if it's worth it.

Use the search on this forum and you will find all the stuff you need, then comeback and ask specific questions.

Post a bigger pic of the starboard (shifter) side of the engine, it looks like someone has tried to hook up a fuel pump or something...

Yeah, it looks like there's some oddball stuff going on there. The top of the intake silencer is gone and it looks like there might be a fuel pump mounted in there with a hose going to the upper transfer port? That's seems like an odd way of going about it! Not surprised if it doesn't work. And do they have one of the spark plug wires routed out the starboard or shifter side of the magneto?

Is this a new motor for you? Or have you been running it like this for a while?

If the coils that you see under the flywheel are colored in some way, blue, green or like a burgundy color they have been replaced and are most likely ok. If they are a natural yellowish epoxy color, even if they don't appear cracked you should plan to replace them. Along with the points, condensers, plug wires and boots. (Cheap insurance)

If you can, maybe you could post some larger pictures of the top of the silencer area and right and left sides of the motor? Good luck! and welcome!

Cheers...................Todd
