ok i messed up- Changed water pump on 1971 125 hp Evinrude, instead of unhooking two wires from powerhead, i removed shift solenoid cover and took solenoid assembly from lower unit. installed water pump kit and put solenoid assembly back together. now shifter bangs and it don't work, What is the best way to fix?? Please any advice?? nobody wants to help with this old motor.
So, where exactly are you with it right now? Did you pull the cable out from the powerhead and install it in the right sequence?
You install the lower solenoid first, making sure the plunger is flush with the top of the solenoid body. If it is aligned correctly, it will be flush.
Then goes the plastic washer, and second solenoid, again making sure the plunger is flush.
Then the wave washer
Then the cover plate.
NOW you can reinstall the lower unit and cable. Hopefully, you tied a string to the cable before removing it so you can pull it back up through the housing.

Thank you Thats what manual says, I'm going to take lower unit off tonite and try to get it right. the banging was when i started motor and pushed forward the thing was like kicking back and forth between gears i guess- i am worried i might have tore it up worse, i only ran it a couple minutes.
took lower unit off- shift wire was pinched- there was metal in lower unit oil- i think when shift wire wore thru it started to send the shifter crazy therefore the banging and not working, - lower unit also won't turn it's locked up- i removed solenoid assembly the rod has nothing on end -i guess it got ate- am going to try to rebuild this myself as this motor is very good. does it sound like i'm on the right track?
