Remove all the mounting bolts,and nuts if there are any.You need to disconnect the shiftshaft by,looking for a small plate on the side of the engine above the lowerunit seperation area,it will have 2 screws.BUT,I dont recall the yr of change,if you dont see the small plate,after removing all the mounting hardware drop the lower unit about an inch,be sure the eng is in rev.makes it eaier.In either case ,you need to locate the connector inside the void area of the eng.it is a brass coupler with 2 screws that usually are slotted for a screwdriver or also a hex head for a socket,either a 3/8 or 7/16.As you install the unit,it is VERY important the indentation on the shaft aligns with the hole in the coupler to allow the screw to fit properly,a large pair of needlenose pliers or one of those screw grabber devices is a great help at this point,do not over tighten,the brass will strip,dont recall the torque,but once tight without force an 18 to 1/4 turn more is plenty

Thanks this is a great sight. what is the carter pin 2 1/2 in. from top of drive shaft Ibroke it removing the lower unit ?
