I need a alpha one outdrive with a 1.50 to 1 ratio. i bought a used one from a guy who said it was. My question is now that i think about it his boat looked older than mine so now i am worried that i may have bought a "pre" alpha outdrive instead of an alpha one drive. How do i make certain it is an alpha one? It does not have any markings on it "been painted" and i really dont want to break it open to check for parts. is there any specific spot on the drive i can check to look for a number or a code that will tell me what type it is or what gear ratio it is. I know his boat was a v-8 but instead of a 350 it may have even been a 454. If it happens to be a pre alpha unit will it still work on my boat with my 350 engine?

Re: identify alpha one outdrive

The alpha one and pre-alpha has enough differences on the outside you should be able to spot if it is different. If it looks the same than you are good there. The gear ratio is a harder one.
