Shift control does not have enough throw

Hello

I used to have a suzuki 25hp engine and it died so I bought a used 2004 mercury tiller serial number 0t897551 and bought the remote conversion kit.

I have installed the kit and I am using the contol box and cables that were attached to the suzuki. They were 33c type cables I believe and I bought the conversion kit to convert them to work with a mercury outboard.

Everything is hooked up and I followed the intructions very carefully step step and I am relatively certain I have installed it correctly.

My problem is that no matter how I adjust the shift controller, the shift cable, or the shift link on the engine, I do not have enough throw in the cable. I ALMOST get into forward and ALMOST get into Reverse at best. I spent about 6 hours trying every adjustment. I have the cable attached to the outmost horn giving as much throw as possible. I am using an aftermarket control box, a seachoice single action that uses 33c type cables that can be found at this link.

Here are my questions:

1. Is this controller not sufficient and do I need to buy another controller?

2. IF so, I would like to buy an aftermarket controller, how do I know it will have sufficient throw and I wont spent $250 and not be able to return it

3. If I buy a new contoller, do I have to buy new cables or can I use my current 33c types that have the mercurty conversion on the engine end?

4. Is there a particular controller you might suggest?

Thanks so much
Harry

Re: Shift control does not have enough throw

This is pretty sad but I guess I am answering my own post...

It blows my mind that this is so simple yet noone I talked to could give me the answer including this forum, several mercury dealers, friends, mechanics...

The issue is that after I believe 2002 Mercs use Next Gen II cables and controllers. I 0had to use a Mercury controller, specifically the 4000 series (I got the 4500) and the mercury next gen II calbes to get 3" of throw from the controller.

I would suggest however that you consider buying an aftermarket controller as the Mercury brand controller I bought for $269 is a piece of crap. All Plastic, I was very dissapointed.

SO thats it, I just needed to spend another $269 for a mercury controller, and $75 for Mercury Next Gen II Cables and that was it. Thats bad enough but too bad I lost about 8 hours of time screwing with it, and 3 weeks trying to find the answer.

Oh well, live and learn Good luck

I guess this is a good example of the customer service you can expect from Mercury dealers. By the way, I went to Portside Marine in Danvers Mass to get help from them. They were worthless. The guy at the counter had no clue, and would not let me speak with a mechanic after asking him 4 times. A two minute conversation with a mechanic would have saved me weeks of wasted time and they would have gotten the $350 of business. Dont expect much if you go there.

Thanks
