96 90 hp shifing problem

On my 1996 mercury 90hp 2 stroke, when I put it in reverse, it is OK when idling in reverse, but when I increase throttle, it jumps out of gear and makes a grinding sound. I also takes longer than it should to engage in both forward and reverse. What might be the problem?
