i have a 1986 merc 115 L6, thats not right! spits and sputters above idle. i've replaced all the fuel lines and filters and noticed water "leaking" out of the #1 spark plug. i bought a new water jacket gasket only to have a tree fall on my truck so pulling the boat out isn't a option at tne moment, and i'm getting married in a month so money's tight. any help on what might be wrong or if i can fix it in the water would be greatly appreciated. is it possible to change the gasket in the lake or am i asking for trouble? thank you for any info you can give.

Better to do the gasket when you are in the yard with access to all your tools.. Way easier to ward off evil spirits that way and when it comes time to start swinging on the bolts to torque things up it is a whole bunch easier to do it on an engine that is not moving...

Do a search here for the post that Clams Canino wrote "Timing and Sync of Merc Inlines (to 1988)" it should set you straight, truly a great post...
