I have a 1999 15hp johnson short tiller rope. I was towing it to Canada for a fishing trip when someone rear ended my boat. My question is the engine was hit by her car and cracked it almost completely towards the bottom (check out picture) is there anyway for the engine to be fixed?

I would exspect everything, from the power head down, to be sprung.

And examine the transom very closely. A lower unit s a very long lever and the impact may have cracked or weakened the transom.

Is that just the way the trailor looks in the picture or was the lower end of the engine slammed against the trailor? It looks like the trailor is bent in the picture like the lower side was pushed into the trailor, If it was I would definately suspect Transom damage.

As far as the motor, I would bet everything from the base of the powerhead down would need to be checked if not replaced. Drive shaft most likely bent, probably cracked the mid caseing due to the force on the lower side. May have even done slightly damage around the transom mount. It couldnt hurt to go ahead and closely look over the powerhead. Probably didnt hurt it but cant hurt to be sure.

Was it her fault? If so, Id wait on the Ins settlement then worry bout fixing the motor, you may not have to even worry bout it. If Im looking at the pic correctly it looks like she hit you fairly hard. My dad runs a body shop/ fiberglass shop and does boat repairs. Judgeing by what Ive seen at his shop I would say you are looking at close to 65% what the motor is worth plus transom repair costs. Normally they figure transom repair in on something like what you have. We had one that looked similiar from a guy that hit a stump, the Ins paid to redoe the transom but as we tore it out we found no issues. Also, if that is trailor damage they will take care of that as well.

if she rear ended you she is at fault. Let her insurance company deal with it. We had a similar situation years ago and even after putting the motor back together we always had problems keeping it together I believe due to a sprung prop shaft

You can be rear ended and only about 92% of the time it is the other persons fault. I have seen a lot of vehicles that were rear ended at my dad's shop and I nor he knows the circumstances but the one who got rear ended was at fault. There are some screwy lawas out there but Im rooting for this one to be the ladies fault who rear ended him. I hopeing he comes out with a big smile in the end..

I've never seen a case of the rear ended person being at fault. Too many laws out there to indicate the person behind is the one at fault. following to closely, excessive speed. It is the responsibility of the driver to be able to stop if a car in front of them does any kind of stop or evasive action. Does it happen all the time? No, but it is supposed to.

There ya go, perfect example of person who got rear ended being at fault only I hope and believe he had lights. Anyway, Yes there are laws protecting those who got rear ended, but there are also those who have plenty of the green stuff and will go out and hire an attorney for the sole purpose of finding the 1 small blown bulb, nicked wire, faded lense, cracked lense, or any multitude of other "technicalities" just to prevent their insurance from going up and have the person's insurance that they hit fix their car even though 50 bystanderds say they saw the guy driveing erratically and not paying attention and then run into the other persons vehicle. Im not trying to start an issue here and Im rooting for him to be the "victim" in this case but Ive seen it all too many times. I do not agree with it at all but I had a 1984 Mercury Cougar that I fully restored only to be rear ended AND put at fault for the collision 3 months after completing the car, all because of 7 tiny drops of white paint on my left tail light. I guess you could say a little over 2 years have passed since I lost my baby and I still vent the anger over that collision. My attorney was even charge with contempt of court for yelling "Bull S**T" when the judge made his decision. Anyway, I hope he comes out great in the end.

First of all does this woman have insurance and where did the accident happen?

I know Michigan has "No fault" insurance so if your insurance won't cover it you are out of luck.

I would say the whole thing is a total loss, the transom of the boat has to be damaged, the motor is gone and the trailer is damaged but repairable, I would say you are owed a new boat and motor.

Get it to a marina and have them survey the damage and take alot of pictures just in case.

This is my worst nightmare, my boat is a 1981 that I have completely rebuilt exactly like I want it and know I would never be able to relace it if it was hit so i always check all my lights before I leave the house and ramp and I run LEDs that are super brite.

I hope this works out for you.
