2001 Mercury 25HP not running right.

I just recently bought a boat with a 2001 Mercury 25E motor on it.
The motor cranks on the first try with the choke on and will idle as long as you want but when I disengage the choke it cuts off in a few seconds. Also, if I try to run it in choke, it will cruise but when I go to give it gas it will cut off unless I cut back on the throttle. Any suggestions on what I should try first? I was told the boat has not been used in a couple of years.
Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the carberator, put a new kit in it and clean it out good, not running in a couple years usually means a gummed up carb, pulling the choke out just creates more fuel by using the choke to create a higher vaccum for the fuel system.

Your jets are clogged, or the passages that they meter are, causing a lean condition. You are correcting this by choking the motor.

Thanks for the replies.
I am not very good at motors but I know the basics.
So I should take the carb off and clean it real good with carb cleaner?
I am going to try this and I will let you know if that fixed the issue.
Thanks
