Default 1977 evinrude 75 HP lower unit doesn't drop

I want to change the the prop on the waterpump. Took all 6 bolts out on lower unit. drops 1/2 inch and stops. Looks like the rod going up to the engine is attached to the lower unit. What should I do to make it drop?

Thanks

Shift rod needs to be disconnected. An OEM shop manual will show exactly how.

Look under the bottom carb and you will find the shift rod connector mentioned above

As suggested already, a shop manuel should be in your hands before starting this kind of work. It is possible to mess up the sift rod adjustment in the process. When you get through, change the lower unit oil. That will let you feel confidant that the pump and lower unit are in good order before going back out. Nothing like draining a lower unit and finding a chocolate milk shake when you just had the thing off and could have done a reseal while it was off for the water pump impeller.

Dropped the unit, after disconnecting rod under carburator. How could I mess up the shift rod if I put the rod back in the same hole Where I took the bolt out?
Also rubber propellor seemed to fit snug. Had to bent the rubber to get it in place. After changing waterpump and put a thermostat in which there was none there it seems that there is very little water coming out of the holes. Only noted water coming out of small hole opposite of the proppelor. Did not see this before? How do I know waterpump is working correct?

Thanks

You are supposed to have to bend those fingers into place when you put a new impeller in, thats how it gets the water pressure going. Pump technology, Lots of fun!

As far as your "little or no water" flow issue, did you run it with the ears on and did you let it heat up to the right temperature so that the thermostat would open?

Did you install an entire Water Pump Kit...?

Was your motor "pee-ing" out the pee hole?

... and don't be concerned too much, some people seem to forget that this board is for helping people with motor problems and they would rather CHASTIZE you for not having a shop manual as opposed to like ... giving information that might help you! After all, its easier to criticize than it is to help but, thats how some people live their lives.

replaced the whole kit with steel plate's etc. Does it matter which direction you bent the fans? ran it on both muflers and in a tub. With the muflers I get quit a bit of water coming out when its in the tub only when I ref the engine but I don't want to do that to long. I replaced the thermostat but the relief valve is missing can't seem to find the part online. Not sure how critical it is. Did find the sercvice manual did not know I had it but doesn't show every step either.
Is the pee hole a small hole which it between the gearcase and exhaust housing oposite of the trimtab and proppelor? Did not see water here before but maybe it was plugged.
