Ok, I can shift through FNR on the side of the motor by hand with no problem...but the shifter feels a little sloppy. When the simplex is connected, the cable won't push the shifter far enough back to go into reverse. I can tell because it doesn't slide all the way into the indent on the rod next to the flywheel. (Ok, my terms are probably a little shakey..but it appears that there is rod located above the shifter inside the housing that has 3 indents...as I move the shifter a roller slides up and down over these indents...when I do this with the cable attached, it will only slide partially into the reverse indent) Is there a way to adjust the slop out of the shift control lever? I've searched the forums but to no avail. I know I could move the cable holder back about an inch with a homemade bracket, but I'd rather do it right.

thanks a million,

**** anderson

Also, I have a 67 40 hp shop manual but it doesn't appear to have this particular adjustment in it.

The shift handle on the side of the motor is adjustable by loosening the two screws that hold it on. The cable is also adjustable by turning the plastic trunion nut.

The universal joint gizmo between the handle and shift shaft that disappears into the exhaust housing has two flats on the ends of two round pins that go through it. If the pins or slots that they fit into are worn, you will have slop.

But my first thought is that your control cable has broken at some time and somebody has reattached the end. That won't work. You have to replace the cable. Once it has broken, there will not be enough travel to shift into both forward and reverse.

Thanks so much for your help!!! I adjusted the lever itself and it works great, I had no idea that it was slotted. I'm still going to need a new cable before long, but it should last this season. Once again, thanks.
