I am looking at a solid boat that has a inline 6 mercruiser but a bad out drive. sterdrive serial # 3326483 engine serial # 3292231 on the 165. I have a rotted out 1979 glastron with a mercruiser 140 inline 4 in it and I cannot get the serial number off the outdrive or motor as they have been taken off. My question is will the outdrive on the 140hp work with the 165hp?

Thanks Bond-O, is the gear ratio handled in the lower unit or the upper end? If it is the upper end then I can probably disassemble and make sure all parts are in good shape and use my good lower unit correct?

And if you dissasemble the drive any further than seperating the halvesthe cost of the special tools (and knowledge) to reassemble it will be more than a brand new SEI drive with a 3 year guarantee.

Well I picked up the boat and was running through everything and the oil in the drive came out clean and clear so I looked into the bellow and tried to move the gimble bearing and it is seized up! Does anyone have a step by step guide for replacing the gimble bearing? do I just pull those snap rings and yank it out?

Take the snap rings out and a three jaw puller/slidehammer will do the trick.Be careful when installing the new.Make sure grease holes line up.Jerry

Thanks for the link Haut, I picked up a gimbal bearing Sierra part number 18-2100 does that sound like the correct one for my boat? How do you tell if it has a trim sender in the gimbal or not?

Re: 140hp mercruiser outdrive to 165

Sorry to bump an old thread, just wondering how this all worked out.

We have a pre alpha 165 with a cracked lower unit housing. I found a reasonably priced 140 pre alpha outdrive unit locally, and was wondering if I could just bolt up the 140 lower to my 165 upper.

I notice you say the gears are in the upper and it sounds like this is what the OP did?

Thanks much.
