Evinrude 70hp 1990 outboard motor dies when put in forward and reverse
We are new boat owners and are trying to figure out why our motor dies everytime we put it in forward or reverse. It will not idle. We replaced the spark plugs. We checked the spark and combustion and both worked fine. We put WD40 into the carb, this did nothing. We need advice on what to do next. We have no manul for this motor. Any advice would be greatly appriecated.

It sounds like carbs to me. Is fuel good. How long has it been since you've ran it? This wouldn't be the sole prob, but what about fuel filter. It should be fuel related if you've checked spark and combustion and are both good. Good luck.

Dies when you put it into forward or reverse, how fast? is it dying instantly? or does it run a second or 2? Put it in gear and see if you can turn the flywheel by hand, eliminate that the probem may be in the gear case. Then llok at compression, spark, sync and link and carbs.
