Hello out there,

We are looking for a pinion gear for the lower unit of our 1969 Mercury 1250. The part number is 43-49751. Does anyone have this part for sale or have any ideas where we can locate it? Our summer depends on it :(

Thanks in advance!

A unit from the late 60's early 70's 1000 SS, 1250, 650 (2309311 THRU 2803561) use the same gears and ratio. Good luck!!!

Would a 1968 Merc 500 pinion gear work? Someone from eBay mentioned he had one that might work...

Hello, The 500 pinion gear will not work.

I have a 1968 1250 (short shaft) parts engine with #3 gone, (that you sent me a PM about), and I decided to answer you here so all could see the reply. Buying the pinion and rebuilding the gear case is fine if you are capable of doing that yerself, but if yer paying a shop to do it it could get real spendy on a 39 year old engine.

I have had much better luck buying decent parts engines and using the lower unit from the parts engine.

First: is your engine a 20 inch shaft, (my 1250 was the 15 inch shaft)?

(If you just buy a pinion that is not important, but a lower unit needs to match if you go that route).

If it is the standard (long 20" shaft) as the short shafts are much more rare, then as another poster told you look for a 1965 plus Merc 650 950 1000 1100 1150 1250 1350 1400 or 1500 which are all inline6s except the 650 which is an inline4. The gear ratios on the early 1970s (1350 and 1150) were different, but they would still bolt up and you just need a different prop, (unless you have the whole engine). The 800 or 850 inline4 also used a different gear ratio, (which you could find a prop for).

I bought my last inline6 parts engine on Craigslist in the Seattle area for $115. It had a very nice lower unit, fuel lines and wiring. When buying a used lower unit you must check the fluid in the lower unit, (if it is milky or dry don't buy the unit), if the fluid is in good shape yer probably OK.

My overpriced $.02. JR
