Default 1967 Mercury twin 350 (35hp) COIL SMOKES

Hi there,
My 67 mercury 350 twin (35hp) smokes out of primary coil when ignition key is turned on. We replaced coil with new one, but problem still exists. Can anyone please help me?

I don't think the issue is with the coil, but a wrong connection somewhere. I bought a new 12 Volt 750 deep cycle marine battery, Motor will start but coils starts to smoke alm ost immediately. I hooked a 6 Volt battery to the motor and it will crank motor and coil does not smoke, but does not have enough juice to start motor.

Should I be using a 6volt battery?

Please help me.

Thanks in advance,
Darcy

Should be using a 12v battery. Does your coil smoke withe just the key on, or with just the motor running?

U should only get power to the coil when rolling over the engine. if its smoking with just the key on than u must have a wiring problem.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can or should troubleshoot this problem? I've tried removing one wire at a time to see what will happen, but it seems that every wire is where it should be, But I have been wrong before. LOL. I appreciate any suggestions or help you can offer.

Thanks again,
Darcy

I figured it out. YEE HAAAAA!!!!

Turns out that the ground wire was corroded. I put a new one on and cleaned all the connections and brroooom brooom with no smoke. Thanks for all the help.

Now I just need to figure out why it won't shift into neutral and reverse. LOL
