When that sort of thing happens the engine is usually burning fuel faster than the supply is supplying it.
Lot of things can cause that. Don't start changing stuff until you know where the problem lies.
First, confirm that it is a fuel supply problem by pumping the primer bulb when it tries to die. If it picks right up fuel supply is the problem.
Try a borrowed portable tank and fuel line. If the problem goes away. . .
Next, carefully inspect the fuel line and connectors for air leaks, pinching or twisting that might restrict the fuel supply or introduce air into the flow.
No problems there, go to the tank and inspect the pickup, antisiphon valve (if it has one), and vent for restrictions.
If the borrowed tank and line did not help, overhaul your fuel pump.
