I have a late 90s carbureted 5.0 that will not start most of the time. We were concerned that the starter was bad because upon turning the key to the ignition position, the solenoid in the starter will click, but the sprocket will not engage toward the flywheel. We have since replaced the starter, and are having the same problems. We have tried moving the throttle back and forth while turning the key and have had success getting the engine to turn over about 2/50 times. We are concerned that there is a problem with the transmission linkage switch and that maybe the signal that the boat is in neutral is not getting to where it needs to go. My expertise in this matter ends at this, as we were sure that adjusting the linkage would possibly fix the problem. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated as we have undertaken what we thought would be a simple repair.

Adjusting shift linkage has nothing to do with the starter engaging. Are you sure it's the starter solenoid clicking or is it the slave solenoid clicking.
Might have a look at this thread.

Ayuh,....

There's a Good Chance that just Removing, Sanding, Cleaning,+ Reinstalling ALL of the Starter's wiring will Cure the Issue,...
Don't forget the (-) Grounds too,... Both Ends....

Just a tiny bit of unseen corrosion will cause these symptoms....
