2001 Merc 90 HP Bendix nut comes loose

The nut on the top of the starter/bendix shaft will come off leaving the nut, spring and the "enclosure washer" completely displaced and rolling around in the top of the engine compartment.

This has happened several times. Does the nut need to be torqued down? Does the nut need to be secured with some kind of adhesive?

This nut is supposed to be self-locking once tightened to spec.

Since it has failed it must be time to replace it. Thread locker is an option, but do you want to be the one to take it apart next time?
