Merc 120 stalls on acceleration

Greetings all.......

1986 merc 120....new points, plugs, wires, rotor etc......ran fine last week, this week it idles rock solid, but when you try to accelerate it sputters than stalls.....it will start right back up but will not take the gas and dies.


any help would be appreciated

You did get the dwell and timing reset to specs after the tuneup didn't you?
And you did readjust the idle mixture didn't you??
If yes to those questions, like Bond-o says, rebuild the carb.

Check for water in the fuel filter and carb. If you're real careful and lucky you can probably get the top of the carb off (8 screws I think) and re-use the gasket. Had a 1980 120 last week that did the exact same thing. It had water in the fuel filter, and when the top of the carb was removed there was 1/8 inch of water in the bottom of the carb. It idled great, but died when you tried to accelerate, then would crank right back up and do the same thing. Was great for NO WAKE zones! Cleaned the water out of the carb and everything was perfect after that.
