Hi all,

My motor is coming up to the 200 hrs service which includes a valve service. I can say I'm okay when it comes to engine repairs, services etc. (not an expert). So I think I can handle a valve adjustment.

My question is, would you recommend I do it or should I take it to an specialist? I assume I can buy the service manual and get the tolerances etc. from it.

Any advice or watch outs for will be greatly appreciated.

I can say that it depends on how the adjustment is made as it can be as simple as turning a screw to as complex as pulling cams and changing shims ONLY a manual will tell

If it still has any warranty left on it your better off letting the dealer do it. Your probably approaching the end of that " if it blows I don't pay for it period" and it wouldn't hurt to have it on record that the dealer adjusted the valves...The interesting thing about four-stroke outboards is how rare they need valve adjustment. Usually the engine will fall apart before you get enough valve wear to worry about and as long as it was done right at the factory (and it almost always is) it shouldn't need to be done below 500 hours.

Interesting. I do agree with the warranty issue. The motor still has 3 years of warranty. The only reason I say it needs the valve adjustment is because the manual says it. The motor runs fine and strong so I'm not sure it needs anything.

I will call the dealer that installed it.

Thanks.
