Hi I am new to this forum, I have been boating all of my life but was given my first boat just recently. All I know about this boat is that it is a Fabuglas Trident 170 that sat in my bossses field for about ten years. I do not know the year, which will be cleared up when he finds the title for me. My uneducated guess on the year of the boat is 1973-1979. The engine on it is the real problem for me it is an evinrude 115 horsepower engine with the starter missing. Since I dont know the year of the engine I cant get a starter for it. I have looked for a serial number on the engine, but all I have found are part numbers. I need to know where on the engine to find the serial number. Thanks in advance for any tips on finding the right numbers.

Re: Unknown Evinrude

Standing in back of the engine, facing the spark plugs, Port is to your Left, Starboard is to your Right.

Look on the Port transom bracket (bkt that bolts engine to boat) for a small plate that has the model and serial number on it. If it's there, what is the model number?

If no plate is there, look on the powerhead for a small quarter size core plug (resembles a small freeze out plug) which may also have those numbers on it. Get the model number to us and we'll pinpoint what you have there.

BTW..... sitting that length of time.... remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetors.

Re: Unknown Evinrude

Thank you for the reply, I will look for the numbers tomorrow. Im not even sure if I am going to be running this engine on the boat. I have a 1971 Evinrude 125 selectric shift, that I know runs very well, it is just having shifting problems. I know that the later 115's are a lot more common than the selectric models, and much easier to find parts for. I guess it all depends on how well the 115 runs once I get it all cleaned up, and get a new starter for it.

Well I found the numbers, I had just forgotten where I had seen that plate and was looking all over the engine itself. It is a 1973 evinrude 115, thanks for the help.

Re: Unknown Evinrude

you have to different types of lower units. the 71 i hydro-electric shift. the 73 is the hydro-mechanical shift. if i were to put money into one or the other it would be the 73. the electric shift the solenoids, and replacement shift switches are nla.
