I got a 1985 evinrude 70hp runs great but its over heating. Changed the thermostat and checked the head it seems fine. Does anyone know what could cause the overheating.

Just so everbody's on the same page, what all does "checked the head" entail?

If my motor was overheating, first thing I'd do is a water pump kit.

The head shows no signs of leakage, I was told something about the exhaust gas backing up in the manifold or something like that. Could that be a possibility.

Sounds like a bad water pump impeller, this is where you should start

you should have a strong (pee stream) tale tell. it only is an indicator the impeller is pumping water, if weak stream, you definitely need water pump service.

Mine is a 1977 Rude 70Hp but if the engin is idleing, should the pee stream be strong or is it ok if it only spit?

Thanks, Mart

sal you should be seeing a strong pee stream, too, even at idle. check the hose & nipple first, sometimes insects climb up in there.
