Not clear what you mean by 'crank but not turn over'
Do you mean that it will crank over , turning over, but will not fire or try to start?
A poor fuel supply from a partially closed fuel petcock can cause an engine to run excessively LEAN and damage pistons.
Pull the spark plugs and look at them in good light/sunlight, are they darkened, blackened, oily, sooty, or bright shiny plated, covered with melted bits of aluminum?
If they are alluminum coated it is too late, you have a seriously damaged engine. If blackened there is a lot of hope.
