I have a 1987 40 HP Mariner 2 stroke O/B which sat in my garage for about a year. I've purged the old fuel and motor starts fine. Initially it ran sluggish and now tends to stop running after being out on the lake a few hours. The motor will crank but it will not turn over until I get it home. I noticed the valve on the gas tank was not fully open and corrected it and I will change the primer fuel line. The last time the boat stopped on me while in neutral waiting to trailer the boat. Has anyone had a problem like this? Any suggestions.

Not clear what you mean by 'crank but not turn over'

Do you mean that it will crank over , turning over, but will not fire or try to start?

A poor fuel supply from a partially closed fuel petcock can cause an engine to run excessively LEAN and damage pistons.

Pull the spark plugs and look at them in good light/sunlight, are they darkened, blackened, oily, sooty, or bright shiny plated, covered with melted bits of aluminum?

If they are alluminum coated it is too late, you have a seriously damaged engine. If blackened there is a lot of hope.
