1996 mercury 120xr died in the water

I have a 1996 mercury 120 xr in a regal rush. I put in the water on friday night it started and it died and then cranked and wouldnt restart . I brought it home and it seems to have spark but i did notice that there was a little water in #3 cylinder not much just about a drop i havent done a compression check yet but any info would be nice or if anyone has had this happen before what did they do ? thanks much

I had the same problem.

3 possibilites.

One your block in cracked but unlikely. Did you winterize it, or at least get all the water out?

Most likely its going to be a head or exhaust manifold gasket. I would point towards the exhaust mianfold gasket. If it start and re starts on land, but not it water, then thats what it is. Its a easy repair.

oh this is easy . drain the fuel from your carbs and try to catch it ina clear container . if it looks cloudy or funky then you have water in the fuel . if water is present it should seperate in a few minutes and settle to the bottom of the glass , if this is present then drain your fuel till it looks good again then go out and buy a fuel water seperater filter and install it , you may want to buy an extra filter depending on how much water you think you have in it . when you get it running again check your fuel vent on the side of the boat and make sure its intact and make sure you filler cap is not leaking . i see this alot
