Default Mercury Part Numbering

I am new to working on Mercury outboards, and was curious about the part numbering system. I need a power pack for my mercury 850. The part number I have is 332-2986A22. My question is does the A22 indicate a supersession of part number 332-2986, or is the 332-2986A22 the only part number that will work? I have been able to find quite a few power packs for 115 h.p. engines that have the same 332-2986 but not A22. Will those work in place of the one I have, or not since that is a 6 cyl. Thanks for any help.

it probably is a supersession of but it didn't come up as one when I did the supersession chain on my Merc parts catalog-yours started at an A3 and is now an A27(from A22)...if you don't like Merc's $474 price tag you can get an aftermarket...CDI brand / part #114-2986...around $260..if ya' can't find one-contact me

Tex, if that is a distributor ignition model, the 4 and 6 cylinder switchboxes were interchangeable. If it is an ADI (four coils), the switchboxes were unique.

Quick search said all these were interchangeable, but you might want to call oldmercs.com
