Starter not engaging

Battery was run dead on a Mercury 125 outboard. charged the battery and now I cant get the starter to engage. I do hear the bendix turning but just a whirring noise. any ideals for a new boater.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to the Engine FAQs, "Outboard won't start". Do the troubleshooting.

You may have a bad battery (being run dead can ruin them forever) or bad wiring from the battery to the solenoid and engine block.

The troubleshooting will tell you what is wrong.
