I'm having difficulty removing the drive shaft from my 1995 Force 40 HP motor. I've removed the lower unit, water pump, propeller, and propeller carrier/shaft. I also removed the drive shaft pinion nut. According to Clymer, the drive shaft should be free to be removed. I've tried mild tapping on the upper part of the shaft to no avail. I'm thinking that the pinion gear is stuck to the drive shaft. Is there a trick or tool to remove it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: 1995 Force 40 Drive Shaft Removal

I have a 1999 Force 40 and there is a nut on the bottom of the drive shaft. IF I remember correct - I had to remove the propshaft bearing carrier before I could get to the nut holding on the Driveshaft nut. I remember it was not easy to get to and I put threadlocker on it during assembly. Yours may be different. I would wait on the tapping until someone with more experience with a 1995 can help.

Thanks for the reply. Your 1999 sounds very similar to my 1995. According to the Clymer book, the years 1995-1999 are the same. I have removed the nut you are talking about (pinion nut). It was a little tricky to get out, but it's off and the drive shaft still won't slide out. Do you recall if the pinion gear (behind the nut) came off easily on your motor? Thanks again!

It has been a year but after removing the nut and water pump assembly - it all came apart fairly easy. Sorry I can't be of more help.
