gear case # and id

I have an 1986 150hp black max mercury outboard motor and need a question anwered. I have a new gear case that matches my old gearcase # exactly but there is a C on the old one and nothing on the new one! The old one is an 86 and the new is from a 87. IS THIS GOING TO WORK? I hope no body would be asking questions about lawn mowers on a boat sight!:) Thanks for the help. If anyone has a good used lower unit for the motor above I would be interested.

Nobody has even the slightest clue what you're talking about.

Is this an outboard, or a lawn mower?

Seriously, make, model, year, and s/n would help a lot.
