!!HELP!! wellcraft 180 classic Hard to put on Neutral

!!HELP!! I have a wellcraft 180 classic that runs perfect except that i have a difficult time to put it on neutral when i'm going either forward or backwards. I have to mess with the shifter everytime harder. Any help will be appreciated, need to take it to the lake soon.

Sal, If that is a I/O you will need to repost in the I/O section. If it is an outboat, post the HP and year of the motor.

Disconnect the shift cable at the engine and see it the control moves freely.

Shift by hand at the motor to see if the shifter linkage moves freely.

If the linkage moves freely by hand AND the control moves easier DISCONNECTED, then the cable needs replacement.
