Question mercury 1972 shifting problems

Can anyone help me with the set up procedure for the 120 mercury shifting cables? Clicking when going into reverse. Want to know the proper setups. Thanks for your time.

Tip: That era setup is known for that when shifting. Do check your setup for proper adjustment, but mine does it on and off also. I was told don't baby it when shifting into gear be blunt when shifting it. If you shift it in slow it will go click click until it goes in. Check your idle speed (rpm) also. To high of an idle can cause it also. good luck.
