Watertube, 86 johnson quick question in need of an answer

Burning daylight here -A quick answer would be awesome

I can't get the watertube to fit up into the grommet at the base of the powerhead. It just aint going. The grommet looks fine when I shine 1,000,000 candlepower up there. The end of the tube is flared, is this right or is it causing my probelm?

The end that fitted into the waterpump isnt flared.

Thanks.

The dang thing is just not going in, the pipe even bends before it goes in. The grommet looks good too, albiet a little small for the diameter of pipe.
