40 johnson trim fluid

Hey guys, what type of fluid goes in the trim on a 40 hp johnson. Went to the lake this am and fished but when I loaded it up the motor would not raise up. Is there a realease to manually raise the motor ? About how much fluid does it hold ? I just bought the boat a month ago so this is all new to me. Thanks for helping a new member.

Trim & Tilt

With someone?s help push the up button, and someone help the motor go all the way up. Lock motor in that position, now fill reservoir, replace cap. Unlock and bush button to lower motor. Keep repeating until it does not take fluid. The unit should operate now. Dextron or power steering fluid.

tashasdaddy, I tried that at the dock and no luck. I did get the motor up by removing the fluid in the trim & tilt. Thanks alot for fluid type.
