Won't start when warm

Hi all,

My 1990 Force 120hp outboard won't start after I've driven around the lake. I can fire it up in my driveway, it fires up fine when I put it in the water. But, after driving around and turning it off, I can't start it back up. It just cranks and it sounds like the engine just won't fire.

I was hoping to get some suggestions on where to start looking for the problem.

Welcome to iboats.

Will it restart if you try to start it right after you shut it off.

Or is the problem only after you let it sit for a period of time?

If so, it could be flooding out. The fuel pump diaphragm can leak fuel into the crankcase and flood it out.

Can be rebuilt for under $20 in parts, and a half hour of your time.
Fuel pump rebuild kits are available from any Mercury dealer, or from and NAPA store, or from the iboats online mall.

What 's your idle set at? Sometimes on my motors I have to bump up the fast idle just like when it's cold.Sometime I even have to rechoke.Jerry

I have tried re-choking and fast idle as well... The flooding out is an interesting idea. When I have time this week I am going to try Roscoe's suggestion

Turns out two of my pistons are shot :(

somehow, when it was cold i was getting some compression out of 'em allowing it to start, but once it warmed up it wouldn't start due to no compression in the 1st and 4th cylinders...

What a bummer.
