Hope someone can help me here i have a 1981 Basstracker with what i think is a 1968 merc 500 thunderbolt with a quicksilver throttle control. My problem is that when i put the control into reverse or foward the motor stalls out but this only happens when the motor is in water it runs fine when i hookup the muffs & run water from a hose.

Re: Motor or control problem

I am not an expert, but this sort of problem has come up many times before. Have a search for "stalls on load", in the Merc. outboard forum.

Here is one of the threads:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=131947&highlight=stalls+on+load

There are so many possibilities as regards fuel, carburettors or more major problems, but most of the questions raised are covered in this and other threads.

Hope this helps.

Re: Motor or control problem

For most of us that have experienced a similar issue, it may have led to some detective work.

Maybe try adjusting carb idle fuel mixture.

or idle speed setting

checking engine compression

if equipped with a magneto it might be removed and serviced

or perhaps delve into carb and fuel pump service.
