2000 70 HP Johnson Impeller

Bought the boat and motor, not over 50 hours on it. Impeller never has been changed. Should it still be changed or not. If so does it have a shift lever you have to disengage. Been told there is one and other person said just undo the bolts on lower unit and it will drop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Definately ! The impellers take a set and lose some flexibility. Also, the gearcase bolts are more likely to seize the longer you put it off. Get a factory manual and the recommended sealants and adhesives. I've always replaced the entire assembly but others may disagree. Finally, someone advised me to use a B&D Workmate for servicing and he was right. This is my '89 70 but I use it for my 4 and 15 as well.

50 hours in 8 years? That's a great motor, I hope you don't mistreat it like that. Bad things happen to machines that don't get used. Gasoline turns to varnish in carburetors, fuel lines and diaphrams dry rot, impellers set up, ants nest inside water passages, wires corrode, etc. etc. etc.

Take her out and run her hard every couple or three weeks.

Yes the shift rod under the bottom carb has to be disconnected, there's also three retaining bolts on the bottom side of the antiventilation plate (one hidden by the torque tab).

Get the manual.
