Hello, I bought a boat last year and I am not really sure what type of maintenance i should do with the engine. I know I would like to replace the lower unit gear lube but I am not sure what type of lube to use. I have an evinrude 175hp the boat is 1983 so I assume the engine is the same. What type of lube do I need? Can you recommend any other service I should do on it? Thanks.

Re: gear lube help

I use the OMC lower unit oil but a lot of folks use the marine lower unit lube available at Walmart. Yes, it should be changed regularly. I do it each season. Some do it more.

Re: gear lube help

Just make sure it is LOWER UNIT OIL not regular 80/90 weight.

The lower unit oil has additives to deal with water intrusion where normal oil doesn't.

I get mine at Wal-Mart and I change it at least 2-3 times a season just to keep an eye on the seals.

Do a search on here for DECARB as that has probly never been done, and probly a new water pump impeller unless you know for sure it has been changed in the last 3 years.

Also if you plan to work on this motor at all get an OEM manual from here at iboats, they are worth 10 times what they cost
