Yamaha 9hp 4 Stroke Oil question

I have a 1 yr old Yamaha 9hp 4 Stroke, just purchased, runs great. Engine did not come with manual, and dealer told me not to worry about oil for the season, since engine is really only for back-up use. Can somebody please confirm what type of oil should be used, and how often I should check/fill?
